We are seeking artists, curators, writers, and amateur film technicians in Southeast Asia who work with moving image, media art, and sound art, to participate in an artistic research lab in Udon Thani, Thailand. Our hosts and teachers will be the gigantic-scaled audio-visual apparatus of outdoor film projection, their projectionists and caretakers, and the space-time of rituals communicating with nonhuman beings belonging to an animistic ecology that itinerant film projection performances facilitate in this region and beyond.
Who is your primary audience? Is it human?
In this unique project initiated by May Adadol Ingawanij, we wish to make artistic research and practice from encountering cinematic and media genealogies rooted in, and routed through, Udon Thani and Thailand’s northeastern region. What would it mean to think the image, its animation, from this locality? What might come into being from asking such foundational questions as ‘what is cinema,’ ‘what is media,’ and ‘what is artistic practice’ from this locality? To set forth would mean to encounter its genealogy of cinematic apparatus and performance practice, which came into being during the previous century from unpredictable processes and developments metamorphosing the technological material and matter belonging to the age of electricity, mass media, war, and the transnational circulation of films, into an animistic ecology and cosmological network of precarious human interrelation with nonhuman powers and beings.
For the three-day lab we will work with a local itinerant film projection troupe with self-taught skills in building its own hybrid digital-analogue film projection apparatus, and in retooling junk screens, projectors and sound systems from a previous era to survive the accelerating cycle of planned technological obsolescence. We will invite the projection troupe to teach participants to use its hybrid tools to install, adapt and present artists’ moving image works with the gigantic-scaled audio-visual equipment of itinerant film projection. Participants will be encouraged to engage creatively with non-gallery and non-theatrical conceptions of image and sound presentation, cinematic duration, and cinematic experience of nonhuman presence, which stem from the animistic genealogy of film projection, and from the conception of media as a ritual of mystical communication and exchange with the beyond human.
As part of this process of mutual learning and skills exchange, the lab’s participating artists, curators, writers, and projectionists will co-curate a performance experimenting with projecting and performing contemporary artists’ moving image and sound works using the itinerant film projection apparatus. Participants will attain hands-on knowledge of outdoor film presentation in this exchange of skills between local practitioners of film projection and artistic and curatorial practioners. To conclude the workshop, an on-site co-curated screening and audio-visual performance will take place as an event addressed to nonhuman entities and extending its invitation to humans.
Animistic Apparatus experiments with expanding the possibilities of projecting contemporary artists’ moving image beyond the institutional contexts of large and small-scale circuits of global contemporary art and global film festivals. It explores possibilities of encounter and exchange between artists’ moving image, media art, and experimental film practices, and Southeast Asia’s regionally-routed genealogies of image projection practices and film/media apparatus. Through the curatorial practices of exhibition-making and sociable field-learning, the project rethinks established principles of cinema ontology, aesthetic experience, and art historical and theoretical language that are often determined by the principles and languages of Western traditions of aesthetics and philosophy.

We are able to fund return economy airfares and accommodation in Udon Thani for up to three participants within Southeast Asia. We aim to subsidise the accommodation expenses of a larger number of participants, and we will be providing free tour bus travel from Bangkok to Udon Thani and return.

รับสมัครศิลปิน คิวเรเตอร์ นักเขียน นักซ่อมเครื่องมือและช่างเทคนิกสมัครเล่น เข้าร่วมโครงการลองของ/Animistic Apparatus ซึ่งเป็นโครงการเข้าค่ายศึกษาทดลอง สำหรับศิลปินและผู้สร้างสรรค์ จัดที่จังหวัดอุดรธานี
โครงการลองของ ซึ่งริเริ่มโดยอาดาดล อิงคะวณิช ร่วมกับ CLOUD และ Noir Row Art Space เชิญชวนให้ผู้เข้าร่วมได้เรียนรู้การติดตั้งเครื่องมือกลไกระบบจอและเครื่องขยายเสียงขนาดยักษ์ ที่ใช้สำหรับฉายหนังกลางแปลงและหนังแก้บน และได้ทดลองนำงานศิลปะภาพเคลื่อนไหว งานเสียง หรืองานมีเดียอาร์ต มาปรับใช้กับบริบทพื้นที่ เวลา กลไก และแนวคิดว่าด้วยคุณภาพและความขลังของภาพและเสียง อันเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพิธีกรรมฉายหนังถวายเจ้าที่และเจ้าศักดิ์สิทธิ์หลากสำนักหลายประเภท
โดยผู้ร่วมโครงการจะได้มีโอกาสเรียนรู้แลกเปลี่ยนกับผู้ประกอบการและช่างเครื่อง ช่างติดตั้ง ในกลุ่มบริการฉายหนังกลางแปลงและหนังแก้บนในจังหวัดอุดรธานี ผู้ซึ่งสั่งสมความชำนาญในการซ่อมแซม ดัดแปลง คิดค้นวิธีปรับใช้เครื่องมือฉายหนังกลางแปลงจากยุคอะนาล็อกผสมผสานเครื่องมือยุคดิจิตอล ให้สามารถใช้ต่อไปได้
